Ideas, projects and controversies of a network created to support the research, creation and circulation of contemporary dance in the Mediterranean region.

The Network (Le Réseau) follows the group of people who work with DBM – Danse Bassin Méditerranée (Dance of the Mediterranean Basin), their desires and expectations, as it follows the encounters held in Istanbul, Tunis, Cagliari, and Marseilles. Filmed in 2004, at a time when the organization was funded by the European Union, this documentary bears witness to a phase of confrontation with regard to Euro-Mediterranean relations.

Can art think and rethink society through its creative practices? 
This film is part of a project on intercultural policies and practices in the performance arts (together with the documentary “The Encounter”, 2004).
I am interested in questioning the perspectives of North-South relations and, on a Mediterranean scale, the relations between European, Northern African and Arab cultures. I direct my attention to them, convinced that experiences from the realm of arts can stimulate our understanding and alternative readings of contemporary reality. (L.F.)
